Un cabinet d’architectes a dessiné un gratte-ciel d’une finesse remarquable en plein cœur de Manhattan à New York.

Située en plein cœur de Manhattan à New York (Etats-Unis) : la tour Steinway. Un gratte-ciel haut de 435 mètres, ce qui en fait le deuxième plus haut de l’hémisphère occidental. Mais ce n’est pas ce qui impressionne le plus à la vision du dernier-né du cabinet d’architectes SHoP, dont la construction s’est achevée fin mars. Il s’agit plutôt de sa très fine largeur : 18 mètres seulement à son sommet.

La tour Steinway est de fait le gratte-ciel le plus mince au monde, construit avec un matériau « des plus beaux et des plus adaptables dont disposent les architectes aujourd’hui », estime le cabinet SHoP : la terre cuite. Les architectes ont voulu la travailler en blocs qui ont été « modelés, extrudés, vitrés, puis empilés en un motif involutif, comme une vague se brisant doucement ». C’est ce travail qui donne à la tour Steinway son design unique et son étonnante minceur.

Le projet a été annoncé dès 2013, mais sa réalisation retardée de plusieurs années en raison de difficultés financières. Neuf ans plus tard, la tour Steinway trône finalement sur Central Park. Les promoteurs viennent d’annoncer que les premiers résidents peuvent commencer à emménager dans l’immeuble.
